Foam dressings: silicone, bordered and non-bordered

Foam dressings cushion the wound and absorb drainage. PCSS carries silicone-bordered foam in flat and sacral shapes, adhesive-bordered foam with a silver option, and non-bordered foam for use under wraps and compression.

Medicare notes

What applies to wound dressings.

Coverage starts with a qualifying wound

Medicare covers surgical dressings when a qualifying wound is present: a wound caused by, or treated by, a surgical procedure, or a wound after debridement.

Policy Article A54563(opens in a new tab)

Applied in the office vs. sent home

When a practitioner applies dressings as part of a professional service billed to Medicare, the dressings are included in that service and are not separately payable. Dressings sent home with the patient can be billed on their own claim, with the patient's home as the place of service — not the office.

Silver and honey formats

We list silver (Ag) and honey products by their base dressing type. Medicare's surgical dressing LCD lists silver and honey among materials whose safety and effectiveness “have not been established,” and classifies dressings by their clinically predominant component — one made predominantly of such materials isn't considered reasonable and necessary. Code each product by its PDAC listing; choose products on clinical judgment.

Questions

Foam dressings: common questions

Net-30 termsNo minimums to startStock orders in the wholesale portal
Bordered or non-bordered foam?

Bordered foam has an adhesive border and stays in place on its own. Non-bordered foam is held with a wrap, tape or compression — the usual choice under compression bandages.

Which HCPCS codes apply to foam dressings?

Foam wound covers are coded by pad size and border: A6209–A6211 without an adhesive border and A6212–A6214 with one. Foam fillers use A6215. Confirm final coding with your billing staff.

How often can foam dressings be changed under Medicare?

Up to 3 times per week for foam wound covers and up to once per day for foam fillers, under LCD L33831.
