Coverage
Decided claim by claim. Surgical dressings need a qualifying wound, a documented evaluation and a current order; dressings applied as part of a billed professional service are included in that service.

Medicare notes

What applies to wound dressings.

Coverage starts with a qualifying wound

Medicare covers surgical dressings when a qualifying wound is present: a wound caused by, or treated by, a surgical procedure, or a wound after debridement.

Policy Article A54563(opens in a new tab)

Applied in the office vs. sent home

When a practitioner applies dressings as part of a professional service billed to Medicare, the dressings are included in that service and are not separately payable. Dressings sent home with the patient can be billed on their own claim, with the patient's home as the place of service — not the office.

Silver and honey formats

We list silver (Ag) and honey products by their base dressing type. Medicare's surgical dressing LCD lists silver and honey among materials whose safety and effectiveness “have not been established,” and classifies dressings by their clinically predominant component — one made predominantly of such materials isn't considered reasonable and necessary. Code each product by its PDAC listing; choose products on clinical judgment.
